If you think Chronos is a medieval, middle-earth or old style fantasy you sir- or madam are very wrong. I know a lot of people are turned off to fantasy stories because of the lack of modern technology so allow me to introduce to you what it really is. Transportation! Do they have trains or airships or submarines? Or automobiles? Or any variation of. And if they don’t what do they use?

Depending on the area, for city travel and short distances horse-drawn carriages are still popular. That is still considered very primitive but its a cheap and efficient form of travel. In Helios they have produced cars that run off of gasoline. Airships are expensive but they have been built for both local and long distance travel. Technology like this is being solely reserved for war and trade at the moment. Airships will range from small, faster vehicles to a slower, larger, ship that might often have a large blimp shape for lift. For the sea, there is ships powered by motors that run on magic, steam, or gasoline. A submarine would be more like something like the Nautilus but they are rare and far more expensive then an average airship.

Do they have telephones?

Telephones are common, most households in Thalus, Helios, Septarion, parts of Silva, and smaller but more advanced communities, have them. They would look more like your classic Victorian age phone with a rotary dial. In other places that do not, there might be a public phone booth installed for communication to areas that do.

Potties and plumbing, do they have em, and how advanced if so?

Plumbing is common unless you live out in more primitive communities. There are facilities that use plumbing and water treatment via magic (automated process that moves water without gravity to a facility that seals it away and treats it), self maintaining for the most part, clean and efficient. Others like Helios have plumbing pipes built into the ground much like ours that goes to a sewer, this does not require the use of automated magic so it is cheaper. Toilets are made from porcelain, mainly crafted in Natu and shipped outwards to other countries, they use running water and have the same amenities as ours would. They are flush able and refill themselves with clean water.

What is the most efficient source of power and is it good for the environment?

Magic, but think of magic as a scource of energy, not explanation, because it really is that. In a more technical aspect its just a easy means to program and automate processes to manage themselves. Water can flow without pumps, light can be delivered to households without wires, and people would be able to take their garbage and dispose of it without it effecting the environment. Magic is still intrusive and not completely tree-hugging, whale-kissing, friendly since it still upsets the Fey (that causes some interesting problems btw)- but it still remains more efficient then other means.

Chronos is in its Industrial Revolution age, but there is still some aspects of it, like the heavy presence of the Mages Guild and magic that would make it more efficient then our own world.

Steam powered devices, gunpowder, magical powered utilities, flushing toilets, mass communication and travel, showers.refrigerators…etc All accessible to the average person, luxuries would include the ability to own your own automated vehicle (air, ground or sea) and have self-sufficient energy.

Personal computers and a world wide web, though there are interactive databanks that exist in upper class libraries and facilities that require easy access to large amounts of information.

How much is known about the laws of nature, physics, and magic? How much of what is commonly known is wrong (e.g., Aristotle’s ideas about human anatomy, which were wrong but accepted for centuries)?

There are myths, magic, and physics. Educated Chronians would know about anatomy, physics, math, astronomy, etc… However education isn’t mandatory and only for those that can afford it.

Are the laws of nature and physics actually different in this world, or are they the same as in real life? How does magic fit in? How do magical beasts fit in?

Magic and magical being all exist through an unknown will, the Fey ir the Abyssal Plane, a collective consciousness that can be manipulated by those skilled enough. Magic still has its own laws of physics that it abides by but it is largely maintained by will. It can break laws of reality, but there is an understanding of what remains consistent once its presence has been removed.

Where is scientific and/or magical research done — universities, private labs, under the auspices of the ruler/government, etc.?

The Mages Guild does the majority of studies based on magic and related matters but depending on the country, scientists may be commissioned to research a subject or ordered to by their government. There are many private and sometimes illegal labs that do not wish to research in the public eye.

In what areas might magic replace technology, and thus suppress its development (example: if a spell to keep food cold is easy and cheap, there’s no need to invent refrigerators)? In what areas might magic cause more rapid technological or scientific development (example: common use of crystal balls might lead someone to think of inventing the lens or the telescope sooner)?

Helios is one of the only places that does not incorporate magic into their technology and instead the use steam, electricity, gasoline and radioactivity. In a lot of ways they are more advanced, in how independent they are from the Mages Guild but a lot of their methods are environmentally destructive or inhumane. The fact that the wished to rebel against the Mages Guild’s tyranny was their reason for finding alternatives in energy and technology.

Thanks, though Ive been told I’m rambly. I guess that is what happens to somebody like myself that was a big fan of Tolkein…and then suddenly I stopped reading books like I used to and my witing lost its luster. I still like to write on occasion though, though I lack the refined skill I feel like I have a writers mentality. Somebody who yearns to share thoughts and ideas, that ideas never stop flowing from my brainspace and need a place to go.

This occurred to me, that when people add in magic to a world that there is a lot of ambiguous factors that get paved over with the concept of OMG MAGIC. So this, is the disambiguation post, however if I feel like I didn’t cover something please feel free to drop me an ask.

Below the cut I will go over firstly what it would be like from the perspective of a world without magic to one that does. Can you simply wave your hands one day and SUDDENLY magic? Read more to find out. Also I’ll go over different types, uses, and then continue down the steps of development of somebody starting out from square one to becoming a archmage. I know I haven’t touched on The Door much either so I will below.

First off, let me try to describe what it would be like to be able to use magic to a world that does not have it. To us when somebody mentions the word ‘magic’ it is generally in the context of something that isn’t serious or overly romanticized. For example “Oh your pudding cup disappeared from the fridge? Must have been magic.” or “Oh I can’t belive how nice the moon looks out tonight, its magical!”. The context of the word means differently to us then Chronians. Its a semi-tangible paradigm to them, a mysterious source of energy that can be bent and moved with a strong will. So if you were to ask a Chronian that their pudding cup is ‘magically’ missing from the fridge, they might actually believe you and start warding the house from fey folk.

Next, I know many people question fantasy stories on how available the ability is. Let put together a comparison of a warrior adventuring with a powerful wizard, so how can one use magic and the other can’t? Does that means the warrior can use basic spells that were in the ‘beginner’ zone for mages? The answer is…maybe?- Lets go through the steps.

The first step: discovering a fondness for magic.
Humans are not naturally born to be able to manipulate magic, on rare occasion somebody might accidental display the use of it without having prior knowledge to using it, but for the most part it takes practice to even be able to get to the point of understanding ‘how 2 magic’. Magic is an art form (Don’t tell Lazuli that) and not all people have the ability to wrap their heads around it. I’m assuming artists of some form or another are my readers to this, so let me explain it to you like this. When you first decided to pick up a crayon/pencil/paint and make something, what went through your mind? Sometimes being an artist is defined on your ability to see things in a certain way, then your brain processes that and tells your hand how to render that onto paper. Other people can still see something with their eyes just as clear as an artist but they can’t grasp the concept of how to render it. Basically, to realize that one can use magic is to suddenly have the epiphany that somehow, that person’s brain can not only see the concept of magic, but to be able to use their hands to render it into something. Mind you, nobody can pick up a pencil and then become their full potential as an artists immediately (this isn’t even your FINAL FORM). The same goes for magic, it takes a certain amount of dedication and study to draw from natural talent, or the original spark of the idea.

The second step: STUDY STUDY STUDY NO LIFE
You ever been really dedicated to something? Like say, when you were a kid playing old video games and remembering even in the most frustrating parts you still sat there dedicated with sweat on your brow, yours hands cramped from mashing buttons all day, and even though this was inhumane torment in pixel form you HAD to conquer it, not for money or fame…but for PIXEL JUSTICE. Now as an adult, a game pulls that kind of BS on you and you find it way easier to put the controller down and throw yours hands up like ‘aint nobody got time for that shit’ and leave. The way to being a master of controlling magic, young padawan, is through your own initial dedication, even if its blind and seemingly unrewarding. Mages do tend to have an overwhelming ego after a while, and often it is because they well deserved it. At this stage in an aspiring mages progression, this dictates minor control, being able to do the ‘beginner spells’ with repetition and ease. Usually this is stage is where most are at during their educational career, when they either enroll into an academy or pursue it as a hobby or side focus. In Silva, a lot of martial arts integrates a low level understanding of magic to compliment physical abilities. However Vauld has a strict rivalry with the Mages Guild and prefers to keep their runemagic and druidism a traditional value that does not associate itself with them.

The third step: choosing a career or focus
There are several reason to need magic, in fact often the mages guild provides simpler and more convenient services that the rest of the world that does not have the technology to create. As in running water, energy sources, airships, etc. The mages guild provides that to those that can afford it. Some mages chose a simpler life of using their magic as services or entertainment. There are several schools that people can choose to go into after the complete their ‘basics’. There is elemental magic that focuses on the bases Pyra, Spirae, aquaria, terra and aether, illusion, manipulation, reanimation, conjuration, healing and dimensional.
Some magic is very cut and dry basic manipulation while others are comparable to intricate ‘threading the needle’ abilities.

The fourth step: The Door
Magic still displays resistance to control no mater the skill level of the user. There is an entire realm called the abyssal plain or ‘the fey’ that seems to be one entire conscious state that streams through the world through the portal in Luna. In order to guard the secrets of true power from the unworthy, there is a glass window ceiling that limits the amount of understanding a mortal can procure. The door is the stopping point were an unskilled mage can go no further. Most do not even know about this as it is a well kept secret that is only shared into the higher ranks of the mages guild. If the secret is shared with an aspiring mage they have a choice take on the trial to ‘open’ the door. Its a grueling task and somewhat dangerous that opens up the mind to upgrade the knew sense of understanding. It takes place in the Abyssal plane, a realm that has no static form and instead molds to whoever treks it. Relatively anything is possible inside of this realm. For whatever reason people want to access more knowledge, they will reveal to themselves how relevant it is to their cause.

3d Model paint over by *Adelein13

I start to forget how the fffuuu my characters look sometimes so I made a few models of their heads in sculptris and put it into PS. All I did was take the original model and paint on hair clothes and minor detail. I didn’t paint any of the skin, that’s all from the model with color overlay.

I actually 3d model a lot, maybe I’ll post the things I make one day, I just use sculptris so nothing super detailed. Back when I was able to export things into mudbox to do better details I could make some pretty cool stuff (mainly dragons).

Duality, one creature is of chaotic nature and one of neutral more peaceful nature. Just two examples of Chronian bestiary, nothing really related of the two.

Lycans are rare, in Chronos most of the afflicted don’t realize they are, and those that do are in a permanent shift. On rare occasions there are some that regain their human form, and manage to cure it through an elaborate and dangerous process.

Caudecus, are also rare, half sentient and docile creatures. They appear to made entirely out of wood and plant matter. Inside they are hallow but can often be a home for feyfolk as their hallow center when alive seems to be a magical portal. Unfortunately these creatures can be corrupted by dark beings. Their ‘masks’ can bend and morph into different shapes, no two look like.

Just started on looking at your and others art. This is a wonderful story. Where do you get your inspiration?

Oh thank you! A lot of my story building comes from years of DnD and generally being a huge fantasy nerd ahaha. I always liked looking into fantasy stories and getting the idea of how they breath and function, especially for playing a DM. Eventually when I stopped playing so much I started to let thing develop on their own and Chronos happened. Its basically a place were I pile all of my inspiration into a new form.

How lovely to hear from you again, Cerul! I am both humbled and honored to know that you have taken time out of your busy schedule to personally pen a letter to yours truly. Imagine my surprise when I found the envelope suddenly resting atop my head this morning. I must say, whatever method of delivery you chose to use, it’s really spot on. I will try my best to send one in return, although with my luck you may find this note in your afternoon tea.

Let’s see, where do I begin? I will attempt to keep my reply brief in hopes that it will not be too taxing to read, as I know that you must have very little time to spare between all of the napping and eating you do. Perhaps one of your supplicants can read it aloud, although I very much doubt that it will sound anywhere near as charming without my accent. Oh, well.

Since my return, Eveline and I have temporarily moved out of my family’s estate to enjoy some time to ourselves and quietly re-marry. You see, there was a evidently a great deal of speculation surrounding my long absence, and as I’m sure you must know, people love to fill in the blanks with the most impossible and absurd reasons for what may have happened. Some even believed I ran off with a pack of werewolves! I can gladly say that here in the mountains we can finally get some peace from all of that rubbish, and my non-existent spice garden is doing swimmingly, thank you.

It’s wonderful to hear that your world is observing some peace as well, and you didn’t even need to eat anyone. Tell me, what does the guild think of the peculiarities of Hetherev?

I could fill pages with the progress that has been made in my line of expertise, but as it stands, I don’t even know if this will reach you. Another time, perhaps.

I don’t find it surprising that you are enjoying your return. Perhaps the life of the academy was a bit too stressful for you. Understandable… it is a taxing profession to a mortal, as you probably feel the need to procreate and tend to your quaint houses outweighing the need to progress in other endeavors. You would be glad to know that I do not miss out on sleep and appetite. Even without moderation I am able to keep up appearances non-the-less, however I don’t mean to boast at my, never aging, immortal human coil.

I was quite confident in the letter reaching you, but it helps to have reassurance. The Mages Guild feels like the lack of turmoil in such a world like Hetherev might have been because of the restrictions of magic, or that magic had faded because it was not needed. That would surely make sense after seeing the changes occur after we had stirred up unnecessary problems. Also take note that by we, I mean mostly you, but do not fret as I seemed to have mended those issues before we left. No accreditation necessary.

Its good to see that you and your wife are re-marrying. I do understand that it is a joyous occasion for human beings to experience such things. She must be a respectable woman to have put up with you for a second term, but I admit that even I find it easy to put up with your flaws for an unknown reason. I do hope that being in a relationship again will not completely take away from your hobbies of drinking and smoking. Although you could always just loosely use the word ‘recreational’ to describe such activities as you have before.

Dare I say, that I actually wish for someone like you to come around and rearrange my progress so that I may correct it again, Lazuli is far more thorough in his endeavors to make up for his abhorrent social skills with an entertaining personality. That being said, I did find you somewhat ‘entertaining’, and I feel that is a suitable compliment to yourself, yes?

I do hope this message gets to you, I have not attempted this before and I await hearing on how it is received.Did this appear from thin air? Did it arrive in the mailbox like any letter? Did the letter ensure that you saw it by replacing itself with one of your most valuable, and often used objects-Your mustache comb I assume? I must say that the entire guild is awaiting to see more results of this new method of cross-world communication.

Since we departed to our separate worlds, I have decided to become more active in the academic wings of the Mages Guild. I have left my ambassadorial post to become more of a headmaster once more. With Helios conquered by the Guild, the world has simmered down in its warfare and does not require me to intervene as often as I had in the past. Someone such as you must have had your own progress as well, how does your spice garden fair? I do hope you don’t neglect your plants as you did when you impersonated being an alchemist.
